Best Cornea Specialist in Hyderabad | Dr. Siva Kumar Wurity

You may not think about your cornea often, but it's doing a lot of heavy lifting. It's that clear, dome-shaped layer right at the front of your eye, and it plays a huge role in how clearly you see. When something goes wrong with it, even something small, your vision can suffer.

At our Elite Eye Hopsital in Hyderabad, our team really focuses on the cornea. We've got a specialized setup just for this part of the eye, and we work hard to protect it, whether that means treating a scratch, infection, or something more complex like keratoconus.

What is the Cornea?

The Cornea is the foremost dome-shaped transparent layer of the eye that helps in focusing incoming light rays onto the retina. That is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It works like the glass on a camera or the windshield of a car. It allows the light to pass through it so we can see clearly. Dr.Siva Kumar Wurity is the best Cornea Specialist in Hyderabad with over 15 years of experience

What happens if the cornea gets damaged?

Even a small injury to the cornea can cause considerable discomfort to the patient. The common symptoms of corneal problems are:

  • Mild to severe blurring of vision
  • Seeing distorted images
  • Eye pain, discomfort, or light sensitivity
  • Swollen red eyes
  • White spots on the cornea
  • Watering of eyes
  • Fluctuating vision that changes with the time of day

In severe cases, total vision loss can also occur and can be irreversible. Hence, timely consultation with a cornea specialist is crucial.

What are the corneal conditions that are commonly seen?

  • Dry eye syndrome – burning and grittiness of eyes, watery eyes, and heaviness of eyes are the common symptoms.
  • Corneal infections or ulcers (Keratitis) – if not treated aggressively and immediately, a corneal infection may rarely lead to severe vision loss.
  • Keratoconus – a condition in which the cornea becomes thin and bulges out like a cone instead of the usual round shape. Severe eye rubbing can cause this condition and should be strictly avoided.
  • Pterygium – a small triangular, whitish layer grows from the margin of the cornea towards the center. It usually develops due to excessive exposure to a harsh environment like the sun, wind, and/or dust.
  • Corneal scarring – corneal infections, trauma, and other conditions like degenerations can result in corneal scarring, which may require corneal transplantation.
  • Corneal degenerations and dystrophies – Congenital dystrophies, corneal degenerations do occur, which may cause blurred vision.
  • A trivial injury can lead to a corneal laceration/corneal tear.

FAQ

Is an Eye Transplant possible?

Among all parts of the eye, only the Cornea can be transplanted. Among all body organ transplants, the Corneal transplant has the maximum success rate. Very soon we will be hearing more about Retinal transplants, though not available for now.

Can a blind person see again with an eye transplant?

If the cause of vision loss is corneal damage, there is a good chance for blind people to regain vision after transplant surgery.

My grandfather underwent cataract surgery. Can he donate eyes?

Yes. Cataract surgery has nothing to do with eye donation. If corneas are healthy, your grandfather can see through the eyes of two people.
